The Most Important Virtue For Academic & Career Success for Students
“Academic
success is much more about hard work than inborn talent,” said Jessica Rose, Biologist
& Science Teacher. Without discipline, hard work is impossible! This means a
student’s academic and career success is dependent on how disciplined he/she
is.
According to an article
published by European centre
for Research & Development UK, “Discipline involves
obedience and willing submission to a rule of life without which a learner will
not attain his/her goal.”
In an
article published by Preserved Articles on “Discipline in Student’s Life”, discipline was defined as, “…orderliness
in life which results from our adherence to certain code of conduct prepared by
the learned people. It also implies our respect to physical and moral laws in
our society”.
Finally, Success Expert & Author of the Miracle of
Self-Discipline, Brain Tracy said “Self-Discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you
should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not”.
All these definition from various personalities and schools of
thought boils down to one thing: If a
student disciplines him or herself to do what must done at the time it must be
done, that student will become academically successful.
Not only that, the student will also cultivate the habit of
self-discipline which will become a sound foundation for his or her career success!
These days, I hear students complain and feel bitter about their
poor academic performance at school. First of all you must note this: academic success is a result not an activity;
and it is the result of disciplined behaviors in relation to school activities!
A researched
publication by HR
MARS,
a firm focused on exploring the academic potential of students said, “If school
is disciplined, the academic performance on the part of students and teachers
will be highly rated”.
That means that the single most important factor responsible
for the moral, academic and career success of students is not what they go to
school to learn, but rather the virtue of self-discipline.
Really I’ll say that
discipline is the foundational virtue that must be learnt for the school,
society, the nation and religious bodies to develop and grow.
Vikash Pathak puts it
in this way, “Self-Discipline is most needed for success in life. Discipline is
a must whether we are at school or at home. It is equally necessary whether we
are in the office or at the playground. Our life, our society, our country or
even the world will go astray without discipline”.
To
be successful in life, the first attitude that must be cultivated is the
attitude of self-discipline. Because without it, it’s
impossible for students to achieve their career, academic, moral, financial,
health, spiritual and relationship goals in life!
1. Self-Discipline at Home
At home,
self-discipline is essential for helping to build a better home in the near
future. Without discipline, there will be absolute chaos at home.
2. Self-Discipline in the Playground
Building a successful
sporting career life and be awarded with prizes and winning the admiration of
others is practically impossible without self discipline. Discipline is
necessary in the playground and as well exercising our bodies to maintain
health.
3. Self-Discipline in Academics
A discipline student
from a discipline school, trained by disciplined teachers and parents will
obviously perform better in class than a student of poor self-discipline!
4. Self-Discipline in Career
When we come to the
world of work, discipline learnt by a student in schools plays a major rule in
increasing productivity and ensuring his or her career success. Without
discipline how can organizations run and grow sporadically?
5. Self-Discipline in Relationships
It’s true that
relationship, marriage and friendship plays a very an impotent role in building
families and sustaining society, but without discipline, the level of chaos in
sexual activities and parenting will be destroy the society.
6. Self-Discipline in Religious
Gatherings
Discipline is also
needed in the religious place of worship to ensure peace, order and harmony in
the worship of God and performing religious responsibilities.
Without controversy,
I’d say that the most important virtue
for moral, academic and career success of students is self-discipline. Once the
entire school authorities, stakeholders, and the students focus on self-discipline,
performance will increase!
As a student, to
increase your academic performances focus on developing the habit of
self-discipline and leading a disciplined life always. Once you do this, you
will do what must be done for your moral, academic and career success!
In the next post, we
shall be looking at how indiscipline affects the academic success of students.
Until then, make sure you discipline yourself on campus, school and the
community and I trust you will have the success you always desire!
