7 ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS EVERY STUDENT MUST MASTER

Organizational skills lie at the top on the ladder of success. Organized people are successful people. Disorganized people are unsuccessful people. Students aiming to be at the top in their academics must master organizational skills.

In the world of work, organizational skills make a difference between the successful worker and the mediocre. The key to success is organization. Organization ensures that things are put at their rightful place and this result in success!

There are 7 organizational skills every student must master to become successful. These skills will make students successful in their academic and their career life!

1.    Planning Skill

Planning is the art of determining what must be done. It requires you come up with a list of things to be done. Proper planning requires you to think on paper. It requires you think through what must be done and draft a manner by which things should be done.

As they say, “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance”. Every student seeking to exude academic excellence must endeavor to plan the term in advance; plan each month in advance; plan each week in advance and finally plan each school day in advance.

Planning helps to manage time wisely and to prepare for daily school activities and exams! Planning gives you confidence and helps you to be well prepared to face everyday challenges of school life.

2.    Prioritizing Skill

Prioritization is the organizational skill of determining which of the items on your list is most important and requires your urgent attention. Once you have planned your activities, you have to prioritize it in sequence and in order.

Wrong priorities are one of the cancers that prevent high academic and career performance. John Maxwell said in his book, 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, “Activity is not necessary accomplishment. Busyness is not equal to productivity”.

Prioritization helps you to focus on high value tasks. It helps you to focus on doing the things which will really bring you closer to your academic and career goals. Once your priorities are right, success will follow like bees follow honeycomb!

3.    Proactive Skill

The key to success is being proactive. Being proactive requires you get on the grind and work on you plans and priorities. It means to be practical; to roll your sleeves and get the job done at the right time.

Procrastination is a deadly enemy. Procrastination results in submitting assignments and project works late. It leads to working under pressure, making terrible mistakes and performing poorly.

Being proactive is the key to overcoming procrastination. You must wake up and work on your goals. You’ve got to stay awake and complete assignments on time. You’ve got to avoid all forms of laziness and motivate yourself to complete your tasks and assignments.

4.    Productivity Skill

To be successful in your academic and career life, you have to be productive. This doesn’t mean being busy. Being productive simply means focusing on doing those things that will lead to the accomplishment of your academic and career goals.

Unsuccessful people mismanage their energy well and successful people manage their energy well. Focus your energy on your goals. Disturbing in class, being absent from school, not taking notes in class, watching films in the evening instead of revising your notes doesn’t lead to academic success!

Refrain from all activities that will not lead you to success! Invest your time and energy in doing things that will make you to reach your academic and career goals. Always ask yourself, “What is the best use of my time and energy right now?”

5.    Progress Evaluation Skill

In management, they say, “What you can’t measure you can’t manage.” To reach your academic and career goals, you must learn to evaluate your progress. Successful students evaluate their performance and then re-strategize and adopt measures that will improve their academic performance.

When I was in senior high school, I realized I was performing badly in French. We were 50 in class and I was taking the 30th position!

I realized that the reason for my bad performance was my negative attitude towards French. I changed my attitude and decided to give time to studying French and become the best in class.
Two terms later, I was the 1st in class! Why? I evaluated myself and found out the reason for my poor performance. Then I adopted new learning strategies, put in more effort and got assistance from French speaking people. As a result, I came on top!

6.    Personal Note-Taking Skill

Note- taking skill is one of the organizational skills that produce outstanding success in the classroom and at the workplace. Note- taking requires concentrating in class and writing the summary of each lesson in your notebook.

Students who take notes in class always outperform those who take their notes from their friends. Taking notes in class helps you to pay attention in class, to follow the teacher and understand the subject under discussion very well.

In your personal study too, you must take notes out of the notes you have in your notebook. The more your write it, the more it sticks in your mind and the faster you can remember it! This is one of the fundamental skills of memorization and academic excellence!

7.    Preparation Skill

I said in my book, Start Something: Discovering the Mindset of Great Achievers to Make Your Dreams a Reality, “Successful people always prepare for their success and unsuccessful always people prepare for their failure!”

To be a successful student you must develop the skill of preparation. Prepare effectively for each class. Prepare effectively for your personal study. Prepare effectively for exams and tests. Brain Tracy asserted, “Painstaking preparation prevents poor performance!”

To prevent poor academic performance, always endeavor to prepare adequately for school, class, your personal study and exams. Once you prepare effectively, you will gain the confidence to perform better and be on top!

Once a student learns and develops these 7 organizational skills, the sky is the limit. Success is habits and skills! These skills will make the student successful in every level of education no matter the subject, the school and the teacher teaching the subject! These skills incorporated into career will produce career success!
